Trees and Wood Ash

This weekend saw us planting an almond tree while waiting for the delivery of persimmon and an Apricot (for one of the tunnels). We decided to take all the stored wood ashes from winter and distribute them equally amongst all the fruit trees. That got us thinking about how many trees we have actually planted over the last couple of years. Gardener's question tie on BBC radio 4 also discussed the importance of trees in removing carbon and storing it from the atmosphere.

So here is a definitive list of the current trees we have planted here, so far at Beechview:

  • Apple: James Greive

  • Apple: Kidd's Orange Pippin

  • Apple: Golden something but not delicious :-)

  • Apple: St Edmunds Russet

  • Apple: Keswick Codlin'

  • Apple: (No idea - gifted from a neighbour)

  • Apple: Lord Lambourne

  • Crab Apple: John Downie

  • Crab Apple: Red Sentinel

  • Crab Apple: Golden Hornet

  • Pear: Conference

  • Pear: Conference

  • Pear: Concorde

  • Pear: Concorde

  • Pear: (No idea - gifted from a neighbour)

  • Plum: Victoria

  • Plum: Victoria

  • Plum: Czar

  • Plum: Czar

  • Plum: Greengage

  • Plum: Green Gage

  • Cherry: Stella

  • Cherry: Stella

  • Cherry: Stella

  • Cherry: Starburst

  • Cherry: Morello

  • Cherry: Morello

  • Cherry: Morello

  • Damson: Merryweather

  • Damson: Merryweather

  • Medlar: Nottingham

  • Elder: Sambuca

  • Elder: Sambuca

  • 2 Fig trees

  • lemon tree

I think that is it for the fruit trees? I then thought about all the other trees that we have planted, Katsura, 4 Rowan, 4 Oak, Weeping Willow, 3 Birch, 10 Cherry plums, 4 Viburnum (shrub/trees), 2 Californian lilacs, 3 Laburnum, Euonymous red cascade, strawberry tree, 2 Maple tree, Almond tree, and Cherry (The bride).

add to that the hedges of wild hedging (hazel, sloe, Hawthorne, sea buckthorn etc, Beech hedges (200 plants), Western Hemlock hedge (80 plants) Privet (60 plants).

And soon the Apricot and Persimmon means that we are beyond excited to see the 70 trees and 340 hedging plants start to really put on some growth this year!

We haven't finished yet though I imagine! and the list does not include all of the trees already present, two apples, weeping birch, scots pine, copper beech, 5 conifers etc.

Maybe we should rename the house??????????
